Amber,

You can get a new 30D for $650 off Calumet.com If you have money to burn, cop the 40D for $250 more. Since your new, i'd get the 30D with a 50mm f/1.8, spare batteries, lens cleaning kit, a bag, etc etc with that extra $250.

Amber, if you are a Canon shooter, stick with Canon. No sense having a backup camera that isn't compatible with your lens collection. =)

I was planning on going Canon. I'm a little stuck between the XSI, the 30D or the 40D. I don't like the idea that the XSI has no digital read on the top, like the 30D or the 40D, but the quality is still the same for a lot less.
The Nikon D80 caught my attention, but I'm so loyal to Canon I'm not sure if I could get that as my solid camera. Most likely a backup?

Thank you so much for your reply. I've got your page book marked and can't wait to see more!!

If you want to go pro, pick Canon or Nikon, just because the system support is awesome. If anything goes wrong with any of your kit, you should be able to find a replacement or rental very quickly. You can also generally rent lenses and other bits of compatible kit for one-time use for particular gigs. That is not true of most other systems.

Because I shoot a lot of tough shows with big crowds, I tend to use inexpensive, easily replaceable gear, like the Nikon D80, and 18-135mm lens (cheap and versatile), and the 50mm f/1.8 (cheap and stunning).

I also make heavy use of off camera flash using Nikon CLS.

I love this advice. I found this site, since your career is pretty much exactly what I'm looking forward to. Band/live photography, with fashion as well. I'm so impressed by your portfolio, and envious! I'm dying to know though, what camera do you use? Or rather, which ONES? I'm in the process of getting a newer digital, but I'm so stuck with what I should do. Any advice?

Thanks for good article! This was quite more eyeopening than what I though at first. As for myself, I have found that what I like most is photographing people as that allows to transfer their expressions and emotions using images. Maybe I'm still starter but for what I have learned is that you really don't need to know everything about everything. Take photos of what you like most but don't forget to try new things along with it. If you limit yourself too much on one subject, you might miss some things that could open up your workflow and style to better level. Anyways, whatever you do, do it well! That's what makes your photos good.
